The Recreation Ground

The Rec’ as it is fondly known has been the permanent home of Torquay Athletic since it opened in 1888. recThe first event was a rugby match between Torquay Athletic and Newton Abbot, but the score seems to have been lost in history. Curiously, a year later, a cycle track was added for ’penny farthings’ bicycle racing.

In the early days the ground was shared between various football teams including Torquay United FC, until 1904 when TARFC became the sole tenants. This forced the football clubs to find new homes.

1910 saw the construction of the ornate ticketing booths and turnstiles. boothsNo longer in use, as the more direct vehicle entrance is more practical, but lovingly restored and standing as testimony to days gone buy when buildings were less functional and more aesthetic in design.

Torquay have recently secured another long lease for the ground from Torbay council so many plans  (which had been on hold) are now back on track for the club, including new bars, a gymnasium, changing rooms and hospitality suites.

130 years at The Rec’, I wonder if the Tics will still be playing there 130 years from now…
